Optimizing Dietetics Education: A Collaborative Initiative for Enhancing Learning in the Redesign of FNH 470

Cohort April 2024: Faculty of Land and Food Systems – Bruna Donatti, Jasmine Zhao, Amy Xian, Maria Serban

Project background

Dietetics is a regulated profession that needs a robust educational framework to ensure competency in practice. FNH 470 is a required course and a critical component of the Dietetics curriculum at UBC, acting as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

FNH 470 would extensively benefit from redesign due to a multitude of reasons, as follows:

  • Cohesive Approach to Nutrition Care Courses: In addition to being part two of a series of three Nutrition Care courses, FNH 470 is closely linked to other courses in the curriculum and to the practicum education placements (PEP). To foster a cohesive learning experience, there is a need to synchronize the content of FNH 470 with preceding and subsequent courses. This alignment ensures a seamless progression of skills and knowledge acquisition in nutritional care.
  • Integration with ICDEP: The Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP) define the minimum set of competencies that a Dietetics student is expected to possess at the point of initial registration as dietitians, enabling their entry to practice. Aligning FNH 470 with the ICDEP is essential to prepare students for professional practice and assessment.
  • Curriculum Changes and Expansion: The UBC Dietetics program has recently undergone a significant revision to its curriculum, notably involving the enhancement of Nutrition Care courses. Following this modification, two cohorts have completed the FNH 470 course under the updated framework. Consequently, it is imperative for us to undertake a reevaluation of the course’s approach and structure.
  • Connection to restricted activities: Restricted Activities are specialized tasks within the Dietitians’ scope of practice that pose significant risks of harm. These activities are reserved for qualified professionals. As students register for dietetics, they must also register for any Restricted Activity expected in their future roles. Therefore, it is imperative for the Dietetics program to adequately prepare students for these responsibilities.

Project details

While specific changes are yet to be determined, potential enhancements may include curriculum revisions, assessments’ practices revision, integration of hands-on learning opportunities, integration of technological tools. A thorough needs assessment will be conducted to identify areas for improvement and determine the specific changes required in FNH 470. This assessment will consider feedback from students, faculty, and community partners.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Improved Student Well-being and Satisfaction: Traditionally known as a challenging and often overwhelming course, by incorporating student perspectives and addressing their needs, the redesigned course will better meet students’ well-being and satisfaction.
  • Enhanced Program Cohesion: The redesign of FNH 470 will contribute to greater cohesion within the Dietetics program at UBC. By establishing connections between courses and promoting a unified approach to education, students will benefit from a more integrated and seamless learning experience.
  • Greater Student Readiness: Graduates of the redesigned FNH 470 will be better prepared and equipped to handle the challenges of the PEP and their future professional careers.
