RENAL: Reinforcement of Education for Nephrology Academic Learning

Cohort March 2023: Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences – Patricia Chang, Fong Chan, Alyssa Azote, Irene Luong, Mina Rim

Course background

The Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy (E2P PharmD) program is a four-year professional program that provides foundational pharmaceutical education. The Medication Management course is a large component of the E2P PharmD program and is comprised of multiple, consecutive modules, each providing students with knowledge of the different systems of the human body.

One of these systems includes nephrology, which was once provided as an elective, but is now considered an integral part of the program due to increasing prevalence of kidney disease in Canada. This increase emphasizes the importance of improving care for nephrology patients by pharmacists, especially as they are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals. The Nephrology module has been running since 2015, thus there is a need for course redesign, as this program should adjust to the dynamic environment surrounding the need for improved nephrology care. Another contribution to the need for redesign is the newly expanded scope of practice for pharmacists, which was announced by the British Columbia Ministry of Health.

Project details

Our project aims to support students by reinforcing concepts through innovative educational opportunities that also promote engagement and enjoyment. We hope the following activities that we plan to incorporate will promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and application of knowledge to better support students’ long-term knowledge retention:

  • Escape room involving a renal-related case
  • Condensed notes summarizing key concepts from lectures
  • New patient case walkthroughs
  • Dialysis simulation activity
